Thank you for your interest in becoming a Potter County Fire Rescue Volunteer Firefighter and serving the Citizens of Potter County. PCFR is a combination Paid/Volunteer Fire Department that relies heavily on its volunteer members to provide emergency response for fire, rescue and medical incidents.

There are multiple steps to the application and selection process:

• Submit a completed application.
• Pass a background check.
• Interview with Assistant Chief of Training.
• Complete and pass new hire physical after you are selected.

You will be given information to call and schedule your own appointment to fit your
schedule. Exam is paid for by the department.

• Complete online training modules prior to beginning of Orientation Training (NIMS Training ICS 100, 200, 700 & 800). Don’t delay getting these modules completed!
• Complete Orientation Training program

PCFR requires all potential members to complete an Orientation Training. This program will provide you with very basic knowledge of the fire service and how our department operates. Classes for Orientation Training are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6 to 10pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 5pm. Attendance is required for all classes unless prior arrangements are made. 

Members are expected to attend a minimum amount of training in each calendar year. Requirements are based upon level of training and/or certification(s). PCFR responds to a wide variety of incidents and it is the expectation that members will be highly trained for these responses. Although the requirements listed below are the minimum acceptable level, this is in no way meant to be interpreted as the total amount of training required by a member to be effective. Any member who fails to meet the minimum standards for training may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination.

PCFR offers the Resource One program through TEEX for our volunteers to gain NFPA Firefighter 1 and 2 along with Hazmat Awareness and Operations Certifications. We also offer Emergency Care Attendant classes to become certified medical responders.

Minimum Training Requirements:

• The minimum number of training hours required by each member will be dependent upon previous training and certification(s).
• Members holding a Texas Commission certification will need an additional 2 hours per appointment. It is the member’s responsibility to acquire the necessary additional hours.
• Basic Wildland Firefighters will need 4 hours of wildland specific training each year.
• EMS responders will need to ensure they are completing required hours for their level of certification. Medical training hours can count for up to one-half of total required hours each year.
• All members will be required to complete mandatory training each year for:
  • Hazardous Materials
  • Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Firefighter Safety
  • Wildland Shelter Refresher
  • Driver Training

The Probationary Year requires a deep commitment for successful completion. This commitment is not only required from the Probationary Member, but also from their family members due to the amount of time required for training and response to calls.
